Vahine II, Australian Stella Owned By Paddy Briscoe
Vahine II
First Viewing

When I first looked for a boat I wanted a plastic sports boat, but found that I didn’t want to spend the money to get what I wanted. I found Vahine II and thought that she would do as a stepping stone to what I did want.

The problem with this theory is that you fall in love with wooden boats as you invest more time and money into them. I won’t be parting with her for a while!

Launched 1962

Built in Sydney by F. Armstrong. Mahogany planking on Spotted Gum frames.

She is equipped with a Single Cyl. 10Hp Volvo Penta MD1, complete with leaking stern gland. I have removed the electric start / charging system as she hand starts so easily.

The toilet is illegal without holding tank and will be replaced with a ‘’port a potty’’.

3 years after purchase the paint inside is ready to be redone… more work!

Refit March 2007
We took the deck back to the cloth and filled about 100 holes.

The cabin top sides had to be renewed. I decided to do away with the “chook fence “and she is now much more comfortable to sail.

Soon to be a ‘lean mean racing machine’! See www.deagonslipways.com.au …thanks Pete.

The hull and topsides had to repainted and a small amount of wood replaced around one chain plate. A new transom, just for the look.
I have also replaced the chrome hardware with bronze where possible.

New self tailing winches, boom, control lines, clutches for halyards,

centre main traveler, sheets, cleats, VHF, nav. lights and more have been added since these pictures.

2007
I try to do all 7 of the classic regattas in the Morton Bay area of Brisbane, and since the addition of a new main we are quite successful on handicap.

This year has seen an increase in Folk Boats and I'm hoping that the addition of a new headsail will mean that I can catch them up wind!
